Dear Student,

Thank you for your interest in applying for a General Assembly scholarship. Unfortunately, our office will not be participating in the Legislative Scholarship program.

While the basis for the program is well intentioned, the opportunity for corruption and political favoritism is wide open. Past investigations by the media have shown that abuses with this program occur frequently, and there is no oversight in the selection process to guarantee a fair and equitable chance for each and every student.

Additionally I have concerns over the cost of this program and the financial burden it places on taxpayers and families. In theory the program is a great idea; however, when one student’s tuition is waived, the payment for that tuition must come from another source, and in this case, it is the taxpayer. Government must start demonstrating some fiscal restraint and cut spending during economic hardships.

I made a commitment to my constituents to do all that is in my power to eliminate waste, corruption, and increase government transparency and efficiency. While I fully support making higher education more affordable for students, I believe as a legislator it is my obligation to set an example in increasing government transparency through personal ethical standards. This is just one step in the process toward rebuilding good government and exercising fiscal stewardship.

Regards,
